In 1981, the French electronic music pioneer Jean-Michel Jarre arrived in China to perform an electronic music concert in Shanghai. That year, Jarre's performance in China marked a groundbreaking moment as it introduced Western music to the Chinese audience for the first time. The event was broadcast live by China Central Radio, reaching an estimated audience of over 500 million Chinese who heard the enigmatic sounds of electronic music for the very first time. This historic performance also served as a wellspring of inspiration for Jarre, with China becoming a significant source of his creative inspiration.

Jean-Michel Jarre was born in Lyon, France, in 1948. He embarked on his music career in the 1970s and is renowned as a performer, composer, and electronic music artist. Often referred to as the "Electronic Father of France" and the "European Ambassador of Electronic Music", he has been awarded the highest rank of Knight in the Legion of Honour, the most prestigious French order.

Jarre holds the distinction of being the first Western musician to conduct a large-scale performance in China following its policy of reform and opening-up, making him a significant contributor and witness to Sino-French cultural exchange.

 

Jarre's performance was not merely a transformational event in the course of Chinese music, but also served as a symbol of Shanghai's status as a global metropolis.
